Chapel Hill Public Library Foundation

All public libraries rely on a combination of public and private funding to ensure excellence. This is why the Chapel Hill Public Library Foundation was established in 1997 to support and enrich the capabilities, resources, and services of the Chapel Hill Public Library through fundraising and advocacy.

Since 1999, the Foundation has managed the Cornelia Spencer Love Trust, from which the Foundation has distributed over $1.3 M to the Library and from which the Library has received over $1.8 million since 1982. Most of the funding comes from the annual Trust interest revenue distributions and is used for general Library needs.

In 2006, the Foundation launched Ensuring Excellence – a capital campaign designed to increase private support to give our Library a margin of excellence. So far, the Foundation has secured and distributed more than $500,000 to the Chapel Hill Public Library.

The Ensuring Excellence campaign is divided into three phases. The first was 9300 Books Now! – an initiative to grow the Library collection by 9300 new items. The second added new collection materials – print books, CDs and DVDs, electronic reference databases, children’s literacy stations, and e-books & e-readers.

The third and final phase launched in 2012, with the construction of the new Library, and concludes in 2015. It targets funding to enhance the new Library, including an Opening Day Collection project, new service programs, more interactive resources for teens and children, mobile technologies, and other elements that help define the “Library of the Future.”

All gifts and donations received by the Foundation are tax-deductible. Gifts to the Foundation are not used to replace local government funding and do not reduce municipal annual operating funds for the Library.
