  • Sounds of the Sonic South
    May 9, 2019
    7:00 pm - 8:15 pm
    - Join us for an evening of audio stories, including the finalists for this years Sonic South competition: short audio documentaries of healthcare, medicine, and illness in the American South.

The Southern Oral History Program (SOHP), housed at the Center for the Study of the American South at UNC-Chapel Hill, invites producers to use archival interviews to create new and thought-provoking short-form audio documentaries, sound art, sonic experiments, and aural landscapes. Producers are encouraged to think creatively about format, structure, and style. Since 1973, the SOHP has recorded interviews with southerners from mill workers to civil rights leaders to future presidents, which are available digitally through the Southern Historical Collection at Wilson Library.

For the 2019 Sonic South audio competition, In Sickness & In Health, producers chose from interviews with Southerners about health, illness, and medical care in their own lives, in their families and in their communities.

This live listening event will contribute to a shared understanding of our past, and how that past connects with our present and informs our future.

  • Chapel Hill History Podcast
    November 14, 2019
    7:00 pm - 8:15 pm
    - Re/Collecting Chapel Hill is a podcast that shares stories about our community’s past from the inside out and from the bottom up to figure out where we came from and why it matters for our shared future. The first season explores public memory, markers, monuments, and memorials, as seen through people from the Chapel Hill community.

You can catch up on episodes you may have missed. Episode One, Holy Week Fast, notes peaceful assemblies and free speech on a range of issues through the years. Episode Two, Young, Gifted, and Black honors individuals whose names were recently added to the Peace and Justice Plaza marker downtown. Episode Three, Honoring Our Dead tours local cemeteries. Episode Four, The Mayor of Franklin Street profiles people who were the driving force behind Chapel Hill's Greenways. The first of three pods with the Silent Sam statue as the main focus - An Old Argument - is out now.

We frequently take photos and videos at our events. Here's what we do with them.
