Get a Library Card

We're currently experiencing issues with our online registration form. We hope to have this remedied shortly. In the meantime, you can sign up for a library account in person at the library Welcome Hub, or call 919.968.2777 for assistance.

Set up your library account by completing the form on the right. You can also stop by the library in person to get a card.

Once you submit the form, you will receive a six-digit "User ID" number. This number is your library account number. You no longer need a physical library card to borrow materials — though you can have one if you wish. Instead, you can access our collection using this number.

Your account will be valid for 30 days after registering online. Stop by the library within this time with your driver's license, government-issued photo ID, or a piece of mail with your address on it so we can verify your account. Once that’s done, your library account will be valid for three years.

Library cards are available at no cost to the following:

  • People who live in Orange County
  • People who pay property taxes to Chapel Hill or Orange County
  • Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools employees, regardless of where they live
  • Town of Chapel Hill employees and those who retired from the Town with 5 years of service, regardless of where they live

Don't meet any of these criteria?

You can get a card for $65 per year. Register now for immediate access and we will be in touch for payment processing.
