Getting a Card

Library cards are available at no cost to the following:

  • People who live in Orange County
  • People who pay property taxes to Chapel Hill or Orange County
  • Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools employees and students, regardless of where they live
  • Town of Chapel Hill employees and those who retired from the Town with 5 years of service, regardless of where they live

If you do not meet any of these criteria and want to check out materials, you can get a card for $65 per year.

What you will need
  • Something with your address (Like a driver’s license, UNC ID, utility bill, or piece of mail) or an employee ID if you work for the Town or CHCCS.
  • A parent’s approval if under the age of 12

How Indoor Park & Pick Up Works

Mon: 10 – 5, Tues: 10 – 7, Wed: Closed, Thurs: 10 – 5, Fri: 10 – 5, Sat: 10 – 5, Sun: Closed

  1. Place holds through the online catalog and select the pick up at “Main Library” option.
  2. Wait for your email notification. Once that arrives you may visit any time we are open, no need to call ahead.
  3. Park at the library and walk to the main entrance.
  4. Follow the “3Ws.” That means wearing a face covering, watching your distance, and washing hands.
  5. Enter the lobby and follow the path. Holds are arranged alphabetically by last name.
  6. Grab your holds and proceed to the self check out stations.

Masks are required at all times inside the building for people older than 5 years.

How University Place Lockers Work

Open 24/7

  1. Place holds through the online catalog and select the pick up at “University Place Lockers” option.
  2. Wait until you receive an email that your hold is ready.
  3. Go to the lockers — located outside at 201 S Estes Dr, next to Alfredo’s Pizza.
  4. Scan your library card or type in your library card number.
  5. Grab your materials, close the door, and enjoy!
